นี่คือ แนวข้อสอบ TOEIC

สรุปว่า นร. ไม่ต้องกังวลเพราะเลือกสอบแบบ Classic ไปก่อน ถ้าคิดว่ามั่นใจค่อยลองไปสอบแบบ Redesigned ถ้ามาเรียนกับอาจารย์เกรียงก็จะอธิบายให้เห็นความแตกต่าง โดยทักษะการฟัง ต้องพัฒนาแบบ Prediction in Advance เท่านั้น จึงจะทำสอบแบบข้อสอบ Redesigned TOEIC ได้

What’s new about the new TOEIC test?

One of ETS’s most important missions is to continuously validate its tests by ensuring that content is aligned with purpose, and that fairness is maintained. The new TOEIC® test reflects our continuous pursuit of excellence in test development.

The improved TOEIC test assesses proficiency by aligning questions with everyday language scenarios that happen in today’s workplace. Tasks are more authentic. Not all tasks have been changed — but some tasks give test-takers the opportunity to respond with language that is appropriate to the situation; in other words, how would someone at work respond in this particular situation?

At the same time, ETS has maintained the integrity and quality of the original TOEIC test. The scale and score range—5 to 495 for each section of the test (listening and reading)—remains unchanged. The difficulty range is the same. Many of the question types are the same also.

How is the new test different?

Listening section enhancements include four major changes:

a decrease in the number of photograph questions in Part 1
the use of both recorded and written questions in Part 3 (conversations) and Part 4 (short talks)
a shift from individual questions to sets of questions in Part 3 (conversations)
the use of different English accents, as spoken in the U.S., Great Britain, Canada and Australia

Reading section enhancements include three major changes:

the elimination of Part 6 (error recognition questions)
the addition of text completion questions (Part 6)
the inclusion of reading sets of questions based on two inter-related passages (Part 7)

One other change is the range of accents in the listening section of the test. There are examples of a U.S. (North American) accent, a Canadian accent, a British accent, and an Australian accent. The accents are slight but they reflect types of English that are taught and spoken in the international workplace. Hence, the TOEIC test is more valid as a test of international communication.

TOEIC คืออะไร

ข้อสอบ TOEIC เป็นแบบทดสอบภาษาอังกฤษสมิทธิภาพ (Proficiency Test) ที่ใช้กันอยู่ ทั่วไปในวงการธุรกิจทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชน

TOEIC เป็นแบบทดสอบที่ใช้วัดความสามารถ ตั้งแต่ผู้ที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษในระดับเริ่มต้น จนถึงผู้ที่ใช้ ภาษาอังกฤษได้ในระดับใกล้เคียงกับเจ้าของภาษา TOEIC เป็นแบบทดสอบมาตรฐาน เช่นเดียวกับ แบบทดสอบอื่นๆ เช่น TOEFL, SAT, GMAT ในประเทศไทยหน่วยงานต่าง ๆ เช่น สถาบันการศึกษา หน่วยงานการบิน การเงิน การโรงแรมและบริษัทข้ามชาติต่างๆ ได้นำ TOEIC ไปใช้ในลักษณะต่างๆ กัน บางแห่งเพื่อคัดเลือกเข้าทำงาน บางแห่งใช้เพื่อวัดระดับความสามารถ ทางการใช้ภาษาของ พนักงาน

TOEIC เป็นแบบทดสอบที่ใช้วัดความสามารถทางด้าน Passive Skill จึงมีอยู่ 2 ส่วนคือ แบบทดสอบ การฟัง และการอ่าน แบบทดสอบ TOEIC เป็นแบบทดสอบแบบเลือกตอบ (Multiple choice) มี 200 ข้อใช้เวลาสอบ 2 ชั่วโมงเต็ม

TOEIC เป็นแบบทดสอบภาษาอังกฤษที่ถือเป็นมาตรฐานสากล

- ผลคะแนน TOEIC สามารถนำไปใช้ได้ทั่วโลก - ผลคะแนนTOEIC สามารถนำไปใช้ได้ทั้งหน่วยงานการศึกษา หน่วยงานการบิน โรงแรม บริษัทข้าม ชาติ การเงิน การธนาคาร - ผู้ที่ต้องการทราบทักษะด้านภาษาอังกฤษสามารถติดต่อขอสอบ TOEIC ได้ทุกวัน จันทร์-เสาร์ตลอด ทั้งปี

ศูนย์ TOEIC รับรองผลสอบที่มีอายุ 2 ปีนับจากวันสอบ

คะแนน TOEIC เริ่มจาก 10 คะแนนถึง 990 คะแนน โดยแบ่งคะแนนการฟังเป็น 5-495 คะแนนและ การอ่าน 5-495 คะแนน

TOEIC วัดระดับความสามารถในการฟังและการอ่าน และทักษะความสามารถ ในการใช้ ภาษาอังกฤษมาใช้งานจริง (Proficiency)

ผู้ที่ต้องการพัฒนาทักษะภาษาอังกฤษควรสอบ TOEIC เพื่อวัดระดับทักษะความสามารถ ของตนเอง เป็นระยะๆ

ในวันลงทะเบียนสอบให้ผู้สอบนำหลักฐานดังต่อไปนี้มาแสดง

1. รูปถ่ายขนาด 2 นิ้วจำนวน 2 ใบ 2. บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนตัวจริง (ในกรณีที่ยังใช้ใบเหลืองจำเป็นต้องติดรูปถ่าย) หรือ Passport

หมายเหตุ ในกรณีที่ผู้สอบยื่นหลักฐานไม่สมบูรณ์ถือว่าสละสิทธิ์สอบ

TOEIC ข้อปฏิบัติในการเข้าสอบ

1. เมื่อเข้าห้องสอบให้นั่งตามที่เจ้าหน้าที่ศูนย์ TOEIC กำหนดให้นั่งเท่านั้น 2. ห้ามนำอุปกรณ์สื่อสารทุกชนิด (เพจเจอร์ โทรศัพท์มือโทร) เข้าห้องสอบโดยเด็ดขาด ไม่ว่าในกรณี ใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น แม้ว่าปิดเครื่องแล้วก็ตาม 3. ไม่อนุญาตให้นำสิ่งของที่นำมาติดตัวมาด้วย เช่น กระเป๋าถือ เอกสารต่างๆ รวมถึงทรัพย์สินใดๆ เข้า ห้องสอบโดยเด็ดขาด

ทางศูนย์จะจัดที่ไว้สำหรับวางของ แต่ไม่ถือเป็นการรับฝากสิ่งของ ดังนั้นทางศูนย์ไม่รับผิด ชอบต่อการสูญหาย หรือเสียหายใดๆ ทั้งสิ้นที่เกิดขึ้นกับสิ่งของหรือทรัพย์สิน รวมทั้งสิ่งของต่างๆ ที่อยู่ภายใน กระเป๋า ที่ผู้สอบนำมาวางไว้ในที่ทำการของศูนย์

การรับผลสอบ และ Reprint สามารถรับผลได้ วันจันทร์-ศุกร์เท่านั้น ระหว่างเวลา 10:00-16:30 น.และผล Reprint รับได้ 2 วันทำ การหลังยื่นคำร้อง หลักฐานในการรับผล

ผลสอบ 1. ใบลงทะเบียนสอบ TOEIC 2. บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนหรือพาสปอร์ตตัวจริง 2.1 กรณีสอบในนามองค์กรและรับรองผลเอง *ผู้สอบจะต้องนำบัตรประจำตัวพนักงานมาด้วย 3. ในกรณีที่ให้ผู้อื่นรับแทนให้นำ 3.1 ใบลงทะเบียนสอบ TOEIC 3.2 บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนหรือพาสปอร์ตตัวจริงของผู้สอบ 3.3 บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนตัวจริงของผู้รับแทน *ในกรณีที่นำเอกสารมาไม่ครบ ทางศูนย์ฯจะไม่แจกผลสอบให้ ไม่รับแจ้งผลคะแนนทางโทรศัพท์ fax หรือ email และผู้สอบที่มีเงื่อนไขบนใบลงทะเบียนจะต้องมารับ ผลด้วยตนเองเท่านั้น

การขอคัดผลสอบ (Reprint) ผู้สอบที่ต้องการคัดสำเนาผลสอบ (Official TOEIC Reprint) ที่อายุไม่เกิน 2 ปี สามารถติดต่อที่ศูนย์ฯเพื่อเขียนคำร้องขอใบ Reprint ระหว่างวันจันทร์-ศุกร์เท่านั้น ระหว่างเวลา 08:00-16:30 น.

หลักฐานในการขอ 1. บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนหรือพาสปอร์ตตัวจริงของผู้สอบ 2. ค่าคัด ฉบับละ 100 บาท (อัตรานี้รวมค่าส่ง EMS) 3. ในกรณีที่ให้ผู้อื่นขอคัดผลแทนให้นำ... 3.1 บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนหรือพาสปอร์ตตัวจริงของผู้สอบ 3.2 บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนของผู้ขอคัดแทน 3.3 ชื่อและนามสกุลของผู้สอบเป็นภาษาอังกฤษตรงตามใบคะแนนชุดเดิม 3.4 ในกรณีที่เคยสอบมากกว่าหนึ่งครั้ง ให้ระบุคะแนนรอบที่ขอคัดให้ชัดเจนโดย ระบุคะแนน หรือ วัน-เดือน-ปีที่สอบไป หรือ แนบสำเนาใบคะแนนเดิม

ศูนย์โททิกฯ เปิดสอบ TOEIC วันละ 2 รอบ วันจันทร์-ศุกร์ เวลา 09.00 น. และ 13.00 น.

หลักฐานที่ต้องนำมาในวันสอบ กรณีสอบส่วนตัว 1. บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนหรือพาสปอร์ตตัวจริง 2. รูปถ่าย 1 รูป ขนาดไม่เกิน 2 นิ้วและถ่ายไม่เกิน 6 เดือน 3. ค่าสอบ 800 บาท (รวมภาษีมูลค่าเพิ่ม 7 %)

กรณีสอบในนามขององค์กร 1. บัตรประจำตัวประชาชนหรือพาสปอร์ตตัวจริง 2. บัตรประจำตัวพนักงานที่มีรูปถ่าย ( Photo I.D.) ** กรณีที่บัตรประจำตัวพนักงานไม่มีรูปถ่ายติด หรือ ไม่มีบัตรประจำพนักงาน ผู้เข้าสอบจะต้องเตรียม รูปถ่าย 1 รูป ขนาดไม่เกิน 2 นิ้วและถ่ายไม่เกิน 6 เดือน 3. ค่าสอบ (ในกรณีผู้สอบชำระค่าสอบสอบเอง) 4. แบบฟอร์มส่งตัวผู้สอบ (กรณีไม่ได้ส่งเอกสารทาง fax)

ผู้เข้าสอบควรสำรองที่นั่งสอบล่วงหน้าอย่างน้อย 1 วันก่อนสอบ โดยมาถึงที่ศูนย์โททิกฯ ก่อนเวลาสอบอย่างน้อย 1 ชั่งโมง เพื่อลงทะเบียนสอบ ผู้ที่สอบในวันจันทร์ถึงวันพฤหัสบดี สามารถมารับผลได้ ในวันทำการถัดไป ตั้งแต่เวลา 10.00 น.-16.30 น.

และผู้ที่สอบในวันศุกร์หรือวันเสาร์ สามารถมารับผลได้ในวันจันทร์และวันอังคารตามลำดับ ตั้งแต่เวลา 10.00 น.-16.30 น. ทางศูนย์ไม่รับแจ้งผลทางโทรศัพท์ ไม่ว่ากรณีใดๆ ทั้งสิ้น สำหรับที่ศูนย์ โทอิกฯ เชียงใหม่ สามารถรับผลได้ใน 3 วันทำการถัดไป ตั้งแต่เวลา 13.00 น.-16.30 น.

อันดับแรก...ก็ต้องแสดงความยินดีกับน้อง ๆ รุ่นใหม่ที่ได้รับโอกาส เมื่อมีหน่วยงานเปิดโอกาสให้ได้ฝึกมุมมองในด้านอาชีพขึ้น โดยเฉพาะในแวดวงสายการบินของไทย จากประสบการณ์ของตัวเอง ถ้านับย้อนกลับไป 20 ปีที่แล้วที่ไปสมัครกับบริษัทที่ตัวเองสังกัดอยู่นี้ ถามตัวเองว่า....

สจ๊วต คืออะไร ???
... เราเองไม่มีคำตอบ
... เราเองเครื่องบินก็ไม่เคยขึ้น

คณะกรรมการถามว่า เราเหมาะที่จะเป็นพนักงานสายการบินนี้ด้วยเหตุผลอะไร?
คือ ... มันไม่มีข้อมูลอะไรเลย
ไม่รู้ว่าจะตอบอย่างไร
ไม่เหมือนกับสมัยนี้ที่มีข้อมูลให้กับเรามากขึ้น นับว่าเป็นโชคดีนะครับ
ตอนนั้นที่ถูกสัมภาษณ์ด้วยคำถามนี้ เราก็อึ้ง
แต่ด้วยความที่อินโนเซ็นท์ เด็กอายุ 20-21 ก็ตอบว่า
“ผมคิดว่า... ผมคงจะเป็นคนที่มองโลกในแง่ดีนะครับ”
เขาก็ถามว่า ยกตัวอย่างได้ไหม...เราก็ตอบไปตามความรู้สึกนึกคิดของเรา
พอถามตัวเองตอนนี้...
อะไรที่ทำให้เราถูกคัดเลือกเข้าไป ???
น่าจะเป็นคำถามที่โดนที่สุด เมื่อเขาถามว่า

คุณมีบุคลิกลักษณะอย่างไรที่น่าจะเหมาะกับงานสายการบิน ?

ผมตอบว่า ... ผมเป็นคนที่ประนีประนอม

ตัวอย่างก็คือ ถ้าไปกินก๋วยเตี๋ยวเรือ ผมสั่งเส้นเล็กลูกชิ้นเนื้อเปื่อย แล้วเขาเอาลูกชิ้นเนื้อสดมาให้ ผมก็จะรับไว้ก่อน แล้วอีกชามหนึ่งขอเป็นตามสั่งแล้วกันนะครับ ผมว่าประเด็นนี้น่าจะเป็นประเด็นที่โดนใจกรรมการหรือเปล่า เพราะฉะนั้นหมายความว่าการที่ผมได้รับการคัดเลือก ขณะนั้นผมไม่มีความรู้พื้นฐานอะไรเลยว่า...ลักษณะงานเป็นอย่างไร
ตอนที่ถูกสัมภาษณ์ คำตอบของผมมาจากลักษณะความเป็นเนื้อในของตัวเองจริง ๆ

เพราะฉะนั้นผมอยากจะแสดงความคิดเห็นว่า การจัดสัมมนาลักษณะนี้ขึ้นมา ถือได้ว่าเป็นการให้ข้อมูลข่าวสารแก่น้อง ๆ และคนที่สนใจอาชีพนี้

ทั้งในทางบวก.....และ.....ทางลบ
ซึ่งจะทำให้เราจะมีความรู้รอบด้านมากขึ้น

แต่การเข้าไปสัมภาษณ์โดยไม่มีข้อมูล มันอาจกลายเป็นอีกแนวหนึ่งก็ได้ เราเข้าไปด้วยความเป็นตัวตนของเราอย่างแท้จริง ด้วยเนื้อในของตัวเอง

หลายสายการบินทั่วโลกในยุคปัจจุบัน....พุ่งเป้ามาที่คนไทยกันเยอะมาก...

อะไรที่ทำให้สายการบินต่างชาติพุ่งเป้ามาที่คนไทย ???

ใครพอจะมีคำตอบในใจบ้างไหมครับ...
ผมคิดว่า เขาคงจะเล็งเห็นถึงความเป็นไทยของเรานั่นเอง หรือเราจะเรียก Thai touch ที่แปลออกมาว่าเป็นเสน่ห์ไทย ก็ได้

ไม่ว่าเราจะไปอยู่ที่ไหนในสายการบินต่างชาติก็ตาม ผมเชื่อว่าทุกคนคงจะนำเสนอถึงความเป็นไทย หรือเสน่ห์ไทยของเรา เราอาจเคยเจอพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบินสายการบินต่างชาติ โยนขนมปังผ่านหน้าเราไป แต่เหตุการณ์แบบนี้จะไม่เกิดขึ้นในสายการบินของไทย หรือกับพนักงานคนไทยเลย

ไม่ก็ลูกเรืออาจเคยเจอผู้โดยสารลวนลาม หมายถึง ลูกเรือผู้หญิงนะครับ ปฏิกิริยาที่ลูกเรือคนไทยมีต่อผู้โดยสารก็จะเป็นอีกลักษณะหนึ่ง

โดยส่วนตัวเองจากประสบการณ์ทางการบินมา 20 ปี ผมคิดว่าการเป็นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบิน มันเป็นงานที่มีเสน่ห์ แต่ขณะเดียวกันมันก็มีด้านมืดอยู่นะ มันเป็นงานที่หนักมาก แต่อย่างไรก็ตาม ภาระหน้าที่ของงานนั้นจะหมดในช่วงเวลาสั้น ๆ ไม่มีตามมาที่บ้าน ไม่มีการบ้านจะต้องมาติว ไม่ต้องมาสานงานต่อ จบคือจบ ที่เหลือก็ตัวใครตัวมัน

ตามกฎการบินสากล ลูกเรือจะทำการบินได้ประมาณ 70-80 ชั่วโมงต่อเดือน โดยเฉลี่ยอยู่ที่ 70 ชั่วโมง รวมเป็นวันแล้วอาจเห็นว่าบินแค่ 3 วันต่อเดือนเอง แล้วเวลาที่เหลือ ถามว่าจะทำอะไรกันดี ???

เพราะฉะนั้นพวกเราก็จะมีเวลาว่างค่อนข้างเยอะ เนื่องจากงานจะไปกระจุกตัวอยู่ในช่วงเวลาสั้น ๆ บนฟ้า การดำเนินชีวิตในช่วงประมาณ 27 วันที่เหลือก็ตัวใครตัวมัน

อย่างที่หลายคนบอกว่าความก้าวหน้าในอาชีพการงานของลูกเรือมันมีน้อย ตัวผมเองจึงใช้เวลาที่เหลือไปเรียนหนังสือเพิ่มเติม เพราะเป็นคนชอบเรียน ในขณะที่เราต้องเกษียณตอนอายุ 60ปี เราลองคิดถึงสภาพของเราตอนนั้นนะว่าจะเป็นอย่างไร ???

งานนี้เป็นงานที่ผู้โดยสารมองหน้าแล้วต้องทานอาหารลงนะครับ โดยส่วนตัวผมคงจะไม่พยุงตัวเองจนถึงอายุ 60 หรอกครับ งานนี้มันเป็นงานที่หนัก รูปลักษณ์และภาพพจน์ภายนอกสำคัญมาก รวมทั้งสภาพร่างกายของเราด้วย

รูปแบบชีวิต...ก็ด้วยครับ
วันนี้ไปนู้น...วันนู้นไปนี่

อุ้ย...วันนี้ลอนดอน พรุ่งนี้ซิดนีย์ วันต่อไปเวียงจันทร์ หรืออะไรก็ไป มันหลากหลายมาก เรื่องของเวลา การกิน การอยู่ การมอง จึงสำคัญมาก อย่างผมจะมีปัญหาเรื่องการนอน อเมริกานี่ห่างจากเรา 14 ชั่วโมง บางทีร่างกายเรายังปรับสภาพไม่ทันเลย

ที่นี้ย้อนไปที่เรื่องของการคัดเลือก
การสมัครงานของการบินไทยอาจจะถูกครอบงำโดยประเด็นทางด้านการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจสูงมาก เพราะฉะนั้น การตัดสินใจจะรับพนักงานเมื่อไรและอย่างไร จะขึ้นอยู่กับองค์ประกอบทางด้านสังคม และอิทธิพลจากภายนอกอยู่เกือบตลอดเวลา

อย่างสายการบินต่างประเทศอื่น ๆ อาจมีระยะเวลากำหนดอย่างชัดเจน เพราะฉะนั้นต้องบอกเลยว่าเห็นการบินไทย เขาประกาศรับสมัครพนักงานต้อนรับเครื่องบินในหนังสือพิมพ์เมื่อไร....ก็เมื่อนั้น

ทีนี้ ... เราลองมาดูวิธีการคัดสรรหรือการคัดเลือกบุคลากรของหน่วยงานหรือองค์กร จะมีการกำหนดคุณลักษณะ
6 มิติใหญ่ ๆ ของบุคลิกภาพ ดังนี้

1. Realistic พวกเป็นจริงเป็นจัง ซีเรียสกับชีวิต

2. Investigative นักคิด ชอบคิดนู่นคิดนี่
อย่างนักวิทยาศาสตร์ หรืออาจารย์ในมหาวิทยาลัย

3. Artistic พวกศิลปิน ไม่ค่อยมีแบบแผน เป็นตัวของตัวเอง ให้ความสำคัญกับตัวเองสูง
4. Social พวกชอบเข้าสังคม

5. Enterprise นักธุรกิจ เป็นเงินเป็นทองทุกอย่าง พวกนี้ทุกอย่างจะต้องลงตัวเป๊ะ ๆ อย่างนักบัญชี

6. Conventional ยึดระเบียบแบบแผนชอบมีกฎเกณฑ์ ไม่ชอบออกไปจากกรอบ

น้อง ๆ คิดว่า 6 แบบนี้
ผู้ที่มาปฏิบัติหน้าที่พนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบินควรจะมีข้อไหนโดดเด่นที่สุด ?

….Social !!!

ถูกต้องครับ

อาชีพลูกเรือนั้นจะมีมิติทางด้าน Social ค่อนข้างสูงและโดดเด่นล้ำหน้าไปเลย
แล้วน้อง ๆ คิดว่าอันไหนควรจะมาเป็นอันดับที่สอง ?
Artistic นี่มาเป็นอันดับที่สองเลย
เพราะว่าการทำงานด้านนี้ เราต้องอาศัยศิลปะสูงมาก โดยเฉพาะการบริการผู้โดยสารชั้นหนึ่ง หรือ First Class ที่พี่ทำอยู่

เพราะเราต้องมีการประดิดประดอยของที่จะนำออกไป present ให้ผู้โดยสารสูงมาก ๆ ดังนั้น ทำอย่างไรให้มันออกมาแล้วดูดี

มันก็จะมีกรอบ มีข้อกำหนดว่าเราต้องวางจานด้านไหน เอาข้าววางด้านไหน เอากับข้าววางด้านไหน

ถ้าเราบริการแบบลวก ๆ ไม่มีศิลปะในการจัดทำจะทำให้งานที่เสนอออกไปดูไม่ดีนะครับ

ลองคิดดูสิว่า ค่าตั๋ว First Class กรุงเทพฯ-ลอนดอน เท่าไหร่ล่ะ???

แสนกว่าบาท.....นะครับ
ดังนั้น ความคาดหวังของผู้โดยสารที่มีต่อเราจะสูงมาก บางครั้ง...เราไปทำงาน เราอาจลืมไปเลยว่า ผู้โดยสารเขาจ่ายอะไรให้กับเราบ้าง

สิ่งที่เราทำวันนี้ พอเรากลับถึงบ้านแล้ว... ถ้าเราเกิดบริการไม่ดีขึ้นมา โอ๊ย...รู้สึกผิดนะครับ

เรื่องนี้ก็เป็นอีกมุมมองหนึ่งที่มานำเสนอให้น้อง ๆ เห็นคุณลักษณะของคนที่จะทำงานนี้

สำคัญที่สุด คือ ตัวตนของเราเองนั่นแหละ...

ต้องมีบุคลิกที่ดูอบอุ่นเป็นมิตร พร้อมจะช่วยเหลือผู้โดยสาร ซึ่งในบทบาทของผู้ให้บริการต้องมีความรับผิดชอบค่อนข้างมาก และควรจะละเอียดรอบคอบพอสมควร มีวุฒิภาวะทางอารมณ์ ไม่อารมณ์เสียง่าย ๆ เป็นคนที่มีความกระตือรือร้น ยืดหยุ่น ควรจะระวังในเรื่องอคติกับวัฒนธรรมต่าง ๆ เพราะผู้โดยสารจะมาจากที่ไหน หรือเมืองใดก็ไม่สำคัญค่ะ เพราะเขาคือลูกค้าของเรา

นอกจากนั้นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบินยังต้องดูดี มีร่างกายแข็งแรง มีความสูงที่ระดับหนึ่งตามสายการบินนั้น ๆ กำหนด และว่ายน้ำเป็น

ลองคิดดูนะคะว่า...ที่อธิบายมาทั้งหมดนั้น
เราควรจะเลือกอาชีพที่เหมาะกับตัวเรา ???

โมเดลภูเขาน้ำแข็ง
ภาพนี้เป็นการอธิบายความแตกต่างระหว่างบุคคลตาม “โมเดลภูเขาน้ำแข็ง” หรือ Iceberg Model ของ David C. McClelland ศาสตราจารย์ด้านจิตวิทยาจากมหาวิทยาลัย Harvard ตีพิมพ์ในวารสารนักจิตวิทยาอเมริกัน เรื่อง Testing for Competence Rather than for Intelligence ในปี 1973

ซึ่งเปรียบเทียบว่าบุคคลมีองค์ความรู้ และทักษะต่าง ๆ ที่เปรียบเทียบเหมือนกับส่วนของภูเขาน้ำแข็งที่ลอยอยู่เหนือน้ำ คือ เป็นเพียงส่วนน้อยเท่านั้นเมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับส่วนที่อยู่ใต้น้ำ และส่วนที่อยู่เหนือน้ำนี้เป็นส่วนที่เห็นได้ชัดเจน สามารถวัดได้ง่าย แต่ส่วนที่อยู่ในภายในจิตใจ (ส่วนใต้น้ำของภูเขาน้ำแข็ง) เชื่อว่าจะส่งผลให้บุคคลมีพฤติกรรมในการทำงานที่แตกต่างกัน โดยศึกษา และสังเกตจากพฤติกรรมที่บุคคลแสดงออก

การก้าวเข้ามาสมัครเป็นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบิน ทุกคนคงรู้ว่าต้องเรียนจบอะไรและต้องทำอะไร เรื่องนี้เป็นองค์ความรู้ทางทักษะ เป็นส่วนเล็ก ๆ ที่อยู่เหนือน้ำ มองเห็นได้ง่าย

แต่เรื่องของนิสัยใจคอซึ่งอยู่ลึก ๆ ข้างใน หรือข้างใต้ภูเขาน้ำแข็ง ส่วนนี้จะเป็นส่วนที่สำคัญมากของการเป็นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบิน เพราะจริง ๆ แล้ว ความรู้เกี่ยวกับการบริการนั้น พอเข้าทำงานกับสายการบินแล้ว เขาก็จะอบรมให้ความรู้แก่พนักงานทุกคน แต่เรื่องของอุปนิสัย เรื่องของความชอบ มันเปลี่ยนแปลงได้ยากค่ะ

บางคนทั้งชีวิต มีแต่คนคอยให้บริการ เพราะฉันนั้นการที่คุณจะเป็นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบินนั้น คุณจะต้องให้บริการคนอื่นนะคะ คุณจึงต้องถามตัวเองให้มากๆว่า งานนี้ มันใช่ตัวตนจริง ๆ ของคุณหรือไม่ ???

ทีนี้ใคร...จะเป็นคนที่ใช่
.... คนที่มีความรู้และคุณลักษณะเหมาะสมกับตำแหน่ง
แล้วคนอย่างไร
... ที่เหมาะสมกับการเป็นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบิน
นอกจากพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบินจะต้องมีความรู้เรื่องระบบสื่อสารภายในเครื่องบิน ระบบการควบคุมสภาพความดันบรรยากาศภายในอากาศยาน อุปกรณ์ดับเพลิง ระบบออกซิเจน และอื่น ๆ รวมถึงหลักการและกระบวนการให้บริการ ที่ทำอย่างไรผู้โดยสารจึงจะพอใจ

เรื่องของความปลอดภัยและนโยบายของสายการบินเป็นอย่างไร ขนบธรรมเนียมประเพณี กฎหมาย ระเบียบข้อบังคับของประเทศที่เราจะบินเข้าไปเป็นอย่างไร เรื่องของภาษาต่างประเทศ ก็มีความสำคัญมากนะคะ

ความสามารถทางภาษา
สายการบินไม่อบรมให้นะคะ โดยเฉพาะภาษาอังกฤษ คุณจะต้องเรียนรู้มาก่อนอยู่แล้ว ซึ่งทางสายการบินอาจจะอบรมภาษาที่สามให้โดยพื้นฐานทั่วไป ความรู้ทางด้าน การแพทย์ การปฐมพยาบาล การประเมินความเจ็บป่วยเบื้องต้นของผู้โดยสาร เหล่านี้เป็นต้น

ในเรื่องของทักษะการให้บริการนั้น อาชีพนี้ต้องทำงานติดต่อกับผู้คน เพราะเป็นงานบริการ ดังนั้นทักษะในการบริการ การพยายามคิดว่าทำอย่างไรผู้โดยสารจึงจะพอใจ นี้ก็เป็นทักษะที่สำคัญ เรื่องของการพูด การฟังให้เข้าใจ การรับรู้ทางด้านสังคม

... ที่ต้องรู้ว่า ทำไมผู้โดยสารถึงโกรธ
... รู้ว่า ทำอย่างไรผู้โดยสารจะพึงพอใจ
... และรู้ว่า จะแก้ปัญหาอย่างไร
ความสามารถในด้านการคำนวณเบื้องต้น คงไม่หนักมากนะคะ อาจใช้ในการแลกเปลี่ยนสกุลเงินเวลาคุณขายสินค้าปลอดภาษี หรืออาหารและเครื่องดื่ม การประมาณเวลา ระยะทาง ถึงที่หมายอย่างคร่าวๆ

คุณลักษณะของพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบิน

อยากเป็นแอร์...สายการบินฝรั่ง

ลำดับต่อไป..ก็คงจะต้องมารู้จักทางด้านสายการบินของฝรั่งกันบ้าง ว่าจะมีอะไรที่แตกต่างไปจากที่เรารับฟังทางด้าน เอเชีย และตะวันออกกลาง กันมาแล้ว

ผมขอเรียนเชิญ คุณมลฤดี เชิญครับ

กราบสวัสดีท่านประธานในพิธี ท่านอาจารย์ และผู้ร่วมสัมมนาทุกคนนะคะ

คราวนี้ก็ลองมาฟังความแตกต่างของสายการบินอีกซีกโลกหนึ่ง ดูบ้างนะคะ ก็ต้องขอออกตัวก่อนว่า ด้วยประสบการณ์อาจจะอ่อนด้อยกว่าพวกพี่ ๆ ผู้ร่วมสัมมนาคนอื่น ๆ เฉพาะฉะนั้นถ้ามีคำถามอะไรน้อง ๆ ทุกคนสามารถยกมือถามได้เลยนะคะ

เรามารู้จักกับวัฒนธรรมองค์กร หรือ Organization Culture ของทางสายการบินตะวันตก กันก่อนนะคะ อย่างที่เราทราบ ๆ กันค่ะว่า ฝรั่งจะมีมุมมอง หรือทัศนคติต่อการให้บริการบนเครื่องบิน...แตกต่างออกไป

อย่างสายการบินอื่น ๆ ในแถบเอเชีย ก็อาจจะเน้นว่า การบริการคืองานของเรา ดังนั้นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบินจะต้องบริการให้ดีที่สุด แต่ทางสายการบินของฝรั่ง ที่พี่ทำงานอยู่นี่นะคะ มีนโยบายหลักคือ Safety are politely ค่ะ ดังนั้นเรื่องเกี่ยวกับความปลอดภัย ทางสายการบินจะ Concern เป็นลำดับแรกนะคะ

อย่างที่ท่านอาจารย์ ดร. รัชนีวรรณ ท่านได้กล่าวไว้ในช่วงแรกนะคะ สำหรับลูกเรือสายการบินฝรั่งเขาจะไม่ช่วยเก็บกระเป๋า ไม่ช่วยยกกระเป๋าค่ะ เพราะเราถูกสอนกันมาว่า เราต้องดูแลตนเองให้ดีก่อน เพราะว่าถ้าเกิดเหตุการณ์ฉุกเฉินแล้ว ตัวลูกเรือเองไม่ได้อยู่ในสภาพที่สมบูรณ์ เราก็ไม่สามารถจะช่วยผู้โดยสารคนอื่น ๆ ได้

เพราะฉะนั้น ถ้าผู้โดยสารอยู่ในช่วงอายุที่เราดูแล้วว่า เขาสามารถลากประเป๋าขึ้นมาบนเครื่องได้เอง สามารถลากกระเป๋าเดินในสนามบินได้ เขาก็คงสามารถยกกระเป๋าเก็บเองได้ด้วยเหมือนกัน แต่ถ้าเราเห็นแบบสไตล์ไทย ๆ นะคะ ผู้โดยสารอายุเยอะ ๆ หรือว่ามากับเด็ก เราก็สามารถช่วยได้ มันก็เป็นการแสดงน้ำใจเล็ก ๆ น้อยๆ ตามประสาคนไทยนะคะ เป็นการสร้างความประทับใจได้อีกอย่างหนึ่ง ซึ่งก็ทำให้ฝรั่งมองเห็นว่าเป็นเรื่องที่น่ารัก เป็นเรื่องเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ ที่เราสามารถใส่เข้าไปได้ในการแสดงความมีน้ำใจของคนไทย เป็นความมีเสน่ห์ของคนไทย ถ้าทำให้ก็ควรจะทำนะคะ แต่ก็อย่าลืมว่า เราต้องช่วยตัวเราเองให้ดีที่สุดด้วย

ส่วนคุณสมบัติทั่ว ๆ ไป ของสายการบินฝรั่ง

เราจะต้องเป็นคนที่มีความมั่นใจค่ะ เพราะว่าการทำงานบนเครื่องบิน มันเป็นเหตุการณ์หลาย ๆ อย่างเกิดขึ้น ผู้โดยสาร 400 กว่าคนบนเครื่องบิน ร้อยพ่อ...พันแม่...นะคะ

ส่วนเรื่องผู้ร่วมงานบนเครื่องบิน เนื่องจากเราเป็น Base เล็ก ๆ ที่สายการบินต่างประเทศเขามาเปิด Base ที่กรุงเทพฯ ซึ่งอาจจะเป็นด้วยความมีเสน่ห์ของคนไทย รายละเอียดเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ ทีทำให้คนไทยดูน่ารักในสายตาคนอื่น การบริการที่มีความนุ่มนวลอ่อนหวาน เราก็เลยกลายเป็นชนกลุ่มน้อยในสายการบินของเขา จากจำนวนลูกเรือทั้งหมด 7,000-8,000 คน ก็จะมีลูกเรือไทยอยู่ประมาณ 100 กว่าคน

เพราะฉะนั้น เครื่องบิน 1 ลำที่เราขึ้นไป ก็จะมีลูกเรือคนไทยอยู่แค่ 2-3 คน หรืออาจจะคนเดียว ซึ่งทางสายการบินเขาก็จะเน้นเรื่องการทำงานเป็นทีม อย่างสมมุติเวลาที่เราไปสัมภาษณ์นะคะ เราต้องมีความมั่นใจในตัวเอง กล้าพูด กล้าแสดงออก กล้าซักถาม แต่ในขณะเดียวกัน เราต้องเป็นคนที่สามารถทำงานร่วมกับผู้อื่นได้ เราต้องยอมรับฟังความคิดเห็นของผู้อื่น ต้องกล้ายอมรับว่าในสังคมส่วนรวม เราเสนอความคิดเห็นของเราไป คนอื่นอาจจะไม่คิดเห็นเหมือนเราก็ได้ เพราะฉะนั้นเราต้องยอมรับได้ ต้องยอมรับการกระทำที่จะเกิดขึ้น เพื่อความเป็นอยู่ที่ปกติสุขของคนส่วนใหญ่ค่ะ

นอกจากนี้ยังต้องมีความเป็น Independent คือเราต้องสามารถที่จะอยู่ได้ด้วยตัวเองในต่างประเทศนะคะ เพราะว่าเราส่วนใหญ่ในการทำงาน พอเราลงจากเครื่องบินไปแล้ว เราต้องอยู่คนเดียวได้ ไม่ใช่ว่าเหมือนทั่ว ๆ ไป ที่เรามักคุ้นเคยกันแบบคนไทย ไปเข้าห้องน้ำ น้อง ๆ ผู้หญิงต้องไปกันเป็นทีม อะไรประมาณนั้น

ถ้าน้องๆ มีโอกาสเข้าไปสอบสัมภาษณ์ เราต้องแสดงออกให้คณะกรรมการ รับรู้ว่า เราอยู่ได้ เรามีความเป็นตัวของตัวเองมากพอ ที่เราจะสามารถทำงาน และดำเนินชีวิตได้อย่างมีปกติสุขนะคะ

เรื่องของการพูด ก็ต้องพูดจาชัดถ้อยชัดคำ ภาษาเป็นเรื่องสำคัญ เราเป็นลูกเรือจำนวนน้อย ในจำนวนลูกเรือทั้งหมดที่เขามีอยู่บนเครื่องบิน ฉะนั้น ภาษาที่ใช้ในการสื่อสารสำคัญมาก น้อง ๆ ควรเตรียมตัวกันไว้ตั้งแต่เนิ่น ๆ นะคะ

ถ้าสนใจทำงานสายการบินฝรั่ง แล้วต้องสามารถที่จะแสดงความคิดเห็นได้ กล้าแย้ง เพราะว่าแม้กระทั่งหัวหน้างานของเรา ในบางครั้งเขาก็ไม่ถูกเสมอไป เราสามารถแสดงความคิดเห็นได้ว่า ทำแบบนี้บ้างจะดีไหม เพราะฉะนั้นเขาก็จะรับฟังความคิดเห็นของเรา

ถ้ามีเรื่องอะไรกันพูดได้เลย
แล้วทุกอย่างจบ ก็คือจบ

ถ้าเราไม่จบกัน...ตามแบบฉบับของคนไทย ที่เป็นระบบฝากไว้ก่อนเถอะ...อะไรอย่างนี้..จะไม่มีค่ะ

ถ้าเรามีปัญหาอะไรไม่พอใจ เรารู้สึกว่าการทำแบบนี้มันไม่ยุติธรรม เราพูดได้เลยนะคะ

แต่อย่าลืมว่าเราต้องมีรอยยิ้ม ความนุ่มนวล และความอ่อนหวาน

น้อง ๆ อาจจะ เอ๊ะ.. แต่ว่านี่คือของสายการบินฝรั่ง
นี่คะ เวลาสัมภาษณ์ ถ้าเกิดว่าเราไม่เข้าใจ ไม่แน่ใจ ยิ้มได้ค่ะ แต่อย่าตอบรับหรือตอบปฏิเสธ การที่เรายิ้มแล้วตอบ Yes โดยที่เราไม่รู้ว่าเขาถามว่าอะไร ไม่ได้นะคะ เรายิ้มได้ แต่อาจจะถามกลับอีกทีว่า ไม่ทราบว่าคำถามคืออะไร นะคะ

คุณสมบัติของพนักงานต้อนรับ

ส่วนคุณสมบัติทั่ว ๆ ไป ของพนักงานต้อนรับของสายการบินตะวันตก ก็จะต่างกันนิด ๆ หน่อย ๆ เองค่ะ เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับของสายการบินชาติอื่น ๆ นะคะ

ก็อย่างเช่น ส่วนสูงค่ะ ของสายการบินฝรั่ง 163 เซนติเมตร ทั้งหญิงและชาย ไม่มี Maximum ค่ะ 2 เมตรกว่าก็สมัครได้

แล้วก็ว่ายน้ำต้องมีนะคะ 50 เมตร ไป-กลับได้โดยไม่หยุด นอกจากนั้น ต้องลอยตัวในน้ำได้ค่ะ ท่าไหนก็ได้ ขอให้เราลอยตัวอยู่บนน้ำได้ นานอย่างน้อย 3 นาที

อื่น ๆ ก็เช่น ยกของ ยกกระเป๋า ต้องสามารถยกของที่มีน้ำหนัก 28 กิโลกรัม เดินไปได้ 3 ก้าว

ตอนที่พี่ไปสมัครก็สงสัยเหมือนกันว่า ยกทำไม แล้วทำไมต้องเดิน 3 ก้าว จริง ๆ แล้วคำตอบของมันก็คือ เวลาเราไปเป็นพนักงานต้อนรับบนเครื่องบิน เราไม่สามารถเลือกได้ว่าเราจะต้องอยู่บนเครื่องบินลำไหน บางเครื่องอาจจะเป็นเครื่องลำใหญ่ เราต้องมีกำลังแขนที่แข็งแรงพอที่จะทำงานบางอย่างได้

คำตอบของข้อนี้นะคะก็คือว่า... บางครั้งต้องบินกับเครื่องลำเล็กที่มีวิทยาการการประดิษฐ์สมัยเก่า อาจจะยังไม่ทันสมัยพอ เครื่องบินลำหนึ่งของบริษัทที่มีใช้อยู่ ประตูฉุกเฉินเป็นระบบถอดยก แล้วทิ้งออกไปข้างนอก เพราฉะนั้นเราจะต้องมีความสามารถที่จะยกประตูฉุกเฉินบานนี้ได้นะคะ ประตูนี้มีน้ำหนัก 28 กิโลกรัม เราต้องสามารถที่จะยก และโยนมันออกไปนอกเครื่องบินในกรณีเกิดเหตุฉุกเฉินได้

การสัมภาษณ์ และการสอบข้อเขียน

ก็ใกล้เคียงกับของสายการบินอื่นๆ ค่ะ
เราใช้ระบบ TOEIC เหมือนกัน รับที่ 550 คะแนน เมื่อ 7 ปีที่แล้วนะคะ ตอนนี้ก็ไม่ทราบว่ามีการเปลี่ยนแปลงไป
หรือยัง แล้วก็การสมัคร คือสมัย 7 ปีที่แล้วอีกเหมือนกันนะคะ ต้องขอออกตัวก่อนว่า เขาเปิดรับน้อยมาก

ขั้นตอนการคัดเลือกเป็นการ walk in เพื่อเข้าไปรับแบบฟอร์มใบสมัคร ชั่งน้ำหนัก วัดส่วนสูง ยกกระเป๋า แล้วก็ทำทุกอย่างในวันแรกวันเดียวเลย จากนั้นก็จะเป็นการสัมภาษณ์ค่ะ เป็นการทำ Group Discussion กรุ๊ปหนึ่งก็ประมาณ 40 คน 2 รอบนะคะ ก็จะถามเรื่องทั่ว ๆ ไปว่า รู้เรื่องอะไรเกี่ยวกับประเทศเจ้าของสายการบินบ้าง รู้เรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับสายการบินอะไรบ้าง เราก็ยกมือตอบ แต่อย่าลืมนะคะว่าเรื่อง team work เราต้องฟังคนอื่นบ้าง ไม่ใช่ยกมืออยู่คนเดียว แล้วก็ไม่ฟังคนอื่นๆ แต่ก็ไม่ใช่ว่าถ้าเราไม่ได้ยกมือ ไม่มีโอกาสถูกถามเลยเราจะสอบไม่ผ่าน อันนี้ก็ไม่ใช่เหมือนกันนะคะ

ให้แสดงออกถึงความตั้งใจค่ะ ตั้งใจฟังความคิดเห็นของคนอื่น ฟังว่าทุกคนที่ได้รับโอกาสให้เลือกขึ้นมาตอบ เขาตอบว่าอะไร แล้วเรารู้เรื่องไหม แสดงความตั้งใจ ไม่ใช่ว่าเรามาคุยกันเอง เพราะว่าคน 40 คน ห้องใหญ่ อย่างไรกรรมการก็จะมองเห็นทุกคนนะคะ อย่างห้องนี้ผู้ร่วมสัมมนาประมาณด้วยสายตาก็ประมาณ 100-200 คน พี่เองมองจากข้างหน้าเวทีนี้ก็สามารถมองเห็นทุกคน เพราะฉะนั้นเวลาไปสัมภาษณ์ Group Discussion แล้วนั่งข้างหลัง อย่าคิดว่ากรรมการจะมองไม่เห็น ฉะนั้น เป็นตัวของตัวเอง แต่ก็ฟังความคิดเห็นของคนอื่นด้วยค่ะ

แล้วจากนั้นก็จะคัดตัดลงมาเป็น Group Discussion ประมาณ 5 คน กรรมการจะมี 3 หัวข้อให้ Discuss กัน ก็เป็นเรื่องทั่ว ๆ ไป อย่างที่ตอนที่พี่ไปสัมภาษณ์กรรมการก็จะถามว่า ถ้าสมมุติมีผู้โดยสารมา Traffic ที่บ้านเรา 1 ชั่วโมง เราจะพาเขาไปที่ไหนบ้าง เหมือนกับว่าให้เรา 5 คนคุยกันเองในกลุ่มค่ะว่าเราจะทำ Topic ไหน ก่อนจะนำไป Present ให้กับกลุ่มใหญ่ฟัง

ซึ่งตอนที่พี่ไปก็มีเพื่อนร่วมสัมมนาที่เป็น Group Discussion ที่สัมภาษณ์ด้วยกัน เขาก็แสดงความคิดเห็นกัน คนนู้นก็บอกว่าไปวัดพระแก้ว คนนี้ก็บอกว่าล่องเรือไปอยุธยา แต่ว่าตอนที่เราสรุปกัน โอเคมันมีเวลาน้อย เราก็ไปกันแค่วัดพระแก้ว วัดโพธิ์ ก็มีเพื่อนคนหนึ่งพูดออกมาว่า ไปแค่นี้เหรอ ??? คนนี้ก็เลยไม่ได้ผ่านเข้ารอบ เพราะว่าการแสดงความคิดเห็นของเรา มันแสดงได้หลายแง่ หลายมุม เราต้องแสดงให้เขาเห็นว่า ถ้าเราจะเรียงรูปประโยคแบบนี้ เราจะต้องพูดจาเหมือนกับว่า เราให้เกียรติคนอื่นด้วยนะคะ อย่างเช่น ไปแค่นี้เองเหรอ... เอ๊ะ... เราคิดว่าไปทำอย่างนั้นอย่างนี้ด้วยจะดีไหม.. มันก็จะฟังดูดีกว่านะคะ... ถึงแม้จะเป็น Small Group แต่ว่ามันก็ยังไม่ได้มีความเป็นกันเองขนาดเพื่อนกัน มันเป็นการสัมภาษณ์ เพราะฉะนั้นก็พึงระวังนะคะ

ต่อไปก็จะเป็นการสอบ Writhing ค่ะ เขียน Essay ประมาณ 10 บรรทัด จากหัวข้อที่เราได้เลือก 3 หัวข้อค่ะ

จากนั้นก็จะเป็นการ Interview ไปเรื่อย ๆ จะเป็นการ Chat กันประมาณ 2-3 ครั้ง จะเป็นการเรียกเข้าไป Interview จากนั้นก็มี Translation เป็นการให้แปลข่าวภาษาอังกฤษเป็นไทยข่าวหนึ่ง แล้วก็ไทยเป็นอังกฤษอีกข่าวหนึ่ง

ถ้าเราผ่านจากการทดสอบทั้งหมดแล้ว ขั้นต่อมาก็จะเป็นการทดสอบทางจิตวิทยา เพื่อดูว่าบุคลิกภาพของน้อง ๆ แต่ละคนเหมาะสมไหมที่จะมาทำอาชีพนี้ อย่างที่ท่านวิทยากรทุกท่านบอกนะคะว่า งานบนเครื่องบินมันไม่ใช่งานที่หรูหราอลังการ ดูภายนอกแล้วมันอาจจะเป็นอย่างนั้น แต่เนื้อแท้ของงานจริงๆ งานหนักนะคะ อาจจะว่าแหม... มันจะหนักสักแค่ไหนเชียว กะอีแค่เสิร์ฟอาหารบนเครื่องบิน 14 ชั่วโมง 2 มื้อ

... แต่ด้วยความกดอากาศบนเครื่องบิน ด้วยเวลาพักผ่อนที่มันไม่สม่ำเสอม เวลารับประทานไม่ถูกต้องตรงตามเวลา สิ่งเหล่านี้มันจะทำให้ร่างกายเรา ค่อยๆอ่อนแอลงนะคะ ฉะนั้นต้องมีร่างกายที่อดทน ร่างกายที่แข็งแรง ถึงตรงนี้ถ้ายังอยากคิดจะประกอบอาชีพนี้ ก็ดูแลตัวเองด้วยนะคะ

The 24 hours before your TOEIC exam

Students who often take the TOEIC exam, especially students of Intermediate level or lower, are often confused by the fact that their scores go up and down each time they take it and try to find help from books or their teachers to stop this happening. Although this can sometimes be the result of being confused by new language that you haven't had a chance to learn well yet, or your speed of comprehension being slowed down because you can understand more and so read more thoroughly and therefore slowly, for most people it is simply a result of being tired, unhappy or unhealthy some of the time when you take the test. Here are the sixteen???? things that are most likely to help you improve your TOEIC score that you can do in the 24 hours before the exam- you will notice that none of them are about studying English!

1. Don't cram. As there is only one TOEIC exam for all levels of English learner up to very Advanced, all standard American English (both General English and Business English) could be in the exam. That means tens of thousands of words or expressions. Therefore, the chances that the language you study in the 24 hours before the exam are in the test on that day are very low or even zero. Doing language study that close to the exam could even have negative results due to making you tired or making you look out only for the language you have just studied. It is therefore best to finish all your studying at least 2 days before the exam.

2. Stop all other studying. As well as tiring yourself out and confusing your brain with unnecessary English study, reading or studying anything else too heavy and intellectually stimulating can have the same effect. This includes movies and novels with stories that are difficult to understand. The night before the exam, try to watch some comedy or music videos, and leave all studying and other serious stuff until the day after the exam.

3. Avoid other languages. If you speak other foreign languages apart from English, if at all possible avoid speaking, reading and listening to those languages in the days before the exam. This is so that your brain doesn't take any time to switch to "English mode" on the day of the exam.

4. Make sure you sleep well, but not too much. To be on top form on the day of the TOEIC exam, you need to be well rested but not still sleepy from oversleeping. Even if your test is in the afternoon, set your alarm clock to make sure you wake up after 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

5. Eat and drink well, but not too much. Even though you are sitting still, you will burn a lot of calories in the exam due to your brain being active and being stressed. You will need lots of complex carbohydrates from things like bread, bananas etc. to keep up your energy levels until the end of the exam, but make sure you don't eat too much and make yourself sleepy for the first part.

6. Eat and drink healthily, but not too healthily. Avoid sugar, as this will give you lots of energy at the beginning of the exam but leave you tired by the end. Vitamins and other healthy foods can be important to combat stress, but if you are on a diet for slimming reasons you will need to give it up for one day as you won't have enough energy.

7. Get a little exercise. Especially if you are the kind of person who cannot easily sit still for 3 hours, some light exercise and/ or stretching the night or morning before the exam will stimulate your brain, help you avoid fatigue, reduce stress, and give you a break from thinking about the exam. Be sure not to tire yourself out though- a good guide is probably to only do 50 to 75% of your usual workout.

8. Be careful what you drink. Some people find that a single glass of wine or small glass of beer helps them relax on the night before the exam and so get to sleep, but for most people even if it helps you fall asleep it can still make your sleep less deeply and so mean that you wake up more tired than if you hadn't drunk anything. Any more than one glass can also have a negative effect on short term memory (very important for the exam) and also make you need to go to the toilet more often. Avoid too much coffee or tea, as like sugar it will leave you tired when the effect wears off later in the exam. Also, don't drink too much water before you go in, because you won't have time to go to the toilet once the exam has started.

9. Arrive early, but with a plan B. The last thing you need on the day of the exam is more stress from difficulty in finding the place where the exam is being held or worries about being late. At the same time, though, extra time standing around outside the exam venue waiting for the exam to start can make you more stressed and tired. One way of avoiding all of these is to go to the exam venue the day before so that you are sure how to get there. Another is to find out from the internet where the nearest local café is, find the exam venue and go back to the local café for a rest before you go back 20 minutes or so before the time you have been told to arrive for the exam.

10. Reduce all other stress. Especially in the Listening part of the TOEIC test, if your mind wanders off to think about something else for even one second, that could be enough to make you miss the information that can help you answer the question. In the last few days before the exam, sort out all the things that might cause you extra stress and make your mind wander if you have forgotten them, e.g. paying utility bills, replying to all your emails, picking up dry cleaning, and taking out the rubbish.

11. Write a checklist. Another possible source of stress is suddenly remembering you have forgotten something you have to do on the day of the exam. Write a list of all the things you will need on the day. Ticking each thing off as you do it can be a great way of taking away your stress. Things you might need to include are: map to the exam centre, photo ID with your signature on it (e.g., passport), pencils and erasers, turning off your mobile, and a bottled drink for before and after the exam. This could also include things you need to do before you leave the house, like switching off the heating and feeding the cat.

12. Do something relaxing in English on the way there. For example, listening to English music on the way to the exam can help you put your mind into "English mode", without tiring your out at all.

13. Do the same routine the day before. To make sure your body and mind are not expecting sleep or food when you want them to be concentrating on the exam, try to wake up and eat at the same times as you will be able to on the day of the exam at least one day before.

14. Lock your English books away. To stop you doing any unnecessary or counterproductive study, and to stop you even thinking about it, put all your TOEIC textbooks, exam practice materials and notebooks away in a drawer and don't even touch them in the 24 hours before the exam.

15. Do something half your usual level. Reading something in English can be a useful way of getting your brain ready to understand English from the first minute of the exam, but only for someone who reads a newspaper in English everyday. Even somebody who is used to doing something in English everyday should try to make it easier in the 24 hours before the exam in order to make sure they don't get tired, e.g. reading an easier to understand newspaper than usual, only reading the headlines, or reading a newspaper from yesterday you already know all the news from.

16. Have a warm up chat. Again, you will need to make sure it isn't something that will tire you out, but if you can meet with one of your friends outside or near the exam centre and have 5 minutes of chat in English, that will mean you are ready for the exam right from the first question (Listening Part One).

What kinds of questions are there?

All the questions are multiple choice, where you choose the one correct answer from three or four options.

What things should take into the exam?

You will need a pencil and eraser, plus spares, but you will probably not be allowed to take them inside a pencil case to avoid cheating. You will not need a pen. You will also need photo ID with your signature written on it, for example a passport.

There is also quite a long list of things you can't take into the exam. As well as the things that could help you cheat such as notes and dictionaries, you are also need to make sure that your watch alarm and mobile phone do not ring and disturb the test takers, and that you do not take in highlighter pens or a ruler. These last two are to stop some people getting an unfair advantage by using special reading techniques.

What's the difference between TOEFL and TOEIC and which one should I take?

Both tests are written and administered by ETS, an independent non-profit organisation in the USA. TOEFL was designed as a university entrance test (similar to IELTS in Australia and now the UK) and contains some language which is similar to what you would hear and use if studying in an American university. TOEIC was designed as a test of Business English, but is perhaps better described as a test of more everyday English, including the English that you might use in your working life. Although many people choose TOEFL if they want to enter a university and TOEIC if they want to show their English level on a job application, both are often just used as a proof of General English level and you might want to choose which by how well they are recognized in the country you wish to use it in instead of how you want to use it. Alternatively, you can choose by which one you think you will get a better score in- if you have already used English in your studies that might help you to get a higher TOEFL score, and the same with business and TOEIC.

Does the TOEIC run out after two years?

No, once you have taken TOEIC you can write that score on your CV forever, but employers might be suspicious of an old score and ETS recommends that you retake the test after 2 years because your ability will probably have changed.

Is there a break between the listening and reading sections of the TOEIC test?
No

What can I do if I need to go to toilet during the TOEIC test?

Perhaps to make sure you don't drink too much before the exam and therefore don't disturb the other students, no information is given about this by ETS. It may be possible to go to the toilet during the reading test, but as people usually run out of time during this test it could have a very negative impact on your marks.

How well recognized is TOEIC outside Asia?

TOEIC is also popular in the USA, Canada and Mexico, and is used inside some large corporations in Europe. Although an employer in the UK might not have heard of TOEIC, it is still better known than BULATS (the equivalent Cambridge exam), and you should easily be able to explain on your CV and/ or in the interview that it is the world's most popular Business English test and what your level means.

Where can I get real past exam papers to do exam practice with?

You can't. ETS does not make past papers available to either students or textbook writers. If you see a book that claims to be based on real past papers or the analysis of past papers, it is not true. The closest thing you can find is probably a book with the official ETS logo on the cover.

What is the most difficult part of the TOEIC test?

Statistically, candidates score higher on the Reading paper than on the Listening test, but this might be at least partly due to these tests being most popular in countries where English listening skills are generally weak.

Do I need to take a class to improve my TOEIC score?

For most students, studying with a teacher is better than studying at home alone. You might want to particularly think about taking a class if:

1. You are unmotivated

2. The practice materials that you are using tell you which answers are wrong but not why

3. You have taken the test or practice tests several times and your scores have not been rising

4. You keep making the same kinds of mistakes

If a book says "TOEIC ®" on it, does that mean it is an official ETS exam book?

No. ETS gives official recognition to very few TOEIC preparation textbooks and test practice books, and although many of the others might also be good practice there are many examples of cheaply made and unrealistic TOEIC books out there who have not been checked by anyone. You should be particularly careful when choosing materials for the new (after 2007) TOEIC exam, as many small publishers printed books before the final details of the exam were made public by ETS.

What level should I be before I take the TOEIC test?

Although there is no fail in TOEIC, students who are less than Intermediate level will find that their scores go up and down quite a lot every time that they take the test because they have to guess quite a lot of questions. Low level students will also find that doing a TOEIC course or practice TOEIC exam papers will not teach them the language they need to improve their general English level. Perhaps for this reason, TOEIC has introduced the lower level "TOEIC Bridge test", but as yet it is not recognized by many employers and so might not be as useful on your CV as a TOEIC score.

Can I eat and drink in the TOEIC test?

No, you cannot take food and drink into the test. This probably also means no chewing gum and no sweets.

How can I explain what my TOEIC score means to someone who doesn't know the exam?

When you get your test score you will also be given a "can do" sheet that tells you what the score means that you can copy onto your CV and/ or explain in an interview when you apply for a job. It is also worth mentioning that TOEIC is the most popular test of Business English in the world.

Is the new style TOEIC more difficult than the old one?

Although the new test sounds more difficult because it has longer listening and reading texts and less of the easier Listening Part One (photograph) questions, ETS say that the tests are equivalent, and the first batch of official test takers in May 2007 in Japan did not especially complain of the difficulty or see an unexpected change in their scores. The skills needed are, however, slightly different, so some people will find one version of the test slightly more difficult than the other.

How long does it take to get the TOEIC test results?

It depends on the country you are in, but is usually less than a week.

What happens if I am late for the test?

You will not be allowed into the test centre, you will not be able to take the test on another day without paying the full fee again, and you will not get any refund. Please make sure you arrive at least 20 minutes before the arrival time you are told.

If I do really badly, will I still get a certificate?

As there is no pass and fail mark in TOEIC, everyone gets a certificate.

If I don't know the answer, should I leave it blank?

No, never leave a blank. As no marks are taken off for wrong answers, if you don't know the answer try to eliminate any you think are wrong and then quickly guess between those that are left and move onto the next question. In the reading test, if you finish everything and have time at the end you can go back and try these questions one more time if you like, but make sure you write down some answer the first time you try it in case you run out of time.

Can you cram for the TOEIC test?

No. You can improve your score with some tips and tactics for reading and listening, but as grammar is not a big part of the test there is no list of language points that you are sure to come up in the test that you can learn in a short time. TOEIC is a test of all proficiency levels up to very advanced, so virtually all standard American English could come up in the exam.

Do I need to be working/ be a businessman to do the test?

Using English in your working life or studying a Business or Economics subject in English can help a lot for the test, but having a generally high level of English and being prepared for the test are much more important.

Is TOEFL a General English version of TOEIC?

Many people use TOEFL that way, but in fact TOEFL was specifically designed to prepare people to study in American universities, and there is as much specialist academic language in TOEFL as there is Business English in TOEIC. In both tests, however, all of the "specialist" language used is stuff that native speakers who are not businessmen or university students would also use.

Many people say they can't finish the reading paper. Should I take a speed reading course?

Speed reading is not recommended for most non-native speakers, and some experts do not recommend it even for native speakers either. Speed reading is a way of reading a whole text quickly, whereas the best tactic in the TOEIC for reading quickly is usually to read the questions first and try to find the place where the right information is, or at least to skip unimportant parts like the tops and bottoms of emails.

Is TOEIC or TOEFL better known internationally?

In some parts of Asia TOEFL is not as well known as TOEIC, but in most of the rest of the world TOEFL is more famous. In Australia, the UK and parts of Europe, IELTS and the other Cambridge tests such as FCE are better known. However, if you can properly explain what the test consists of, what organisation gives the certificates and what the level means on your CV or in conversation, any of these international qualifications should be useful.

Is TOEIC a test of American English?

It certainly helps to study American English for the TOEIC, especially for the Listening part of the test. If, for example, you only know British English business terms, some time spent studying the American equivalents can be very useful. However, the new format exam also includes some British English and Australian English speakers, and people who have only studied American English since school can find these parts difficult to understand.

What are the differences between the versions of the TOEIC before and after the 2007 changes?

The main changes are that in the new style test there is no error correction section and some of the listening and reading texts are longer with more questions per text. The length of the exam and the number of the questions stays the same, and although the new version seems more difficult ETS say the level of difficulty is also the same.

What TOEIC level is good enough to get a job in English?

Although some jobs such as translators ask for scores of 800 or above, any score above about 300 shows a basic ability to use English in the workplace, it simply depends on the job.

I've heard different opinions on whether TOEIC is a Business English test or not. Is it?

TOEIC was specifically designed to be a test of Business English and the English that people need to use in the workplace. As business is part of all of our lives nowadays, however, it is perfectly useable as a General English test.

How long do I need to study before I take the exam?

In terms of doing exam practice, it is perfectly possible to do the test without any practice at all but even just doing one practice test is very useful at least for making you feel less nervous on the day of the test because you know what you are doing in each part of the test. Make sure, however, that you do not do any practice on the night before the exam. The longest you will probably want to do just exam practice is a month- any longer than that and a good proportion of your preparation for the exam should focus on getting your general English and Business English level up. For example, a one year course or self study plan should probably be 60 to 80% general practice of English and the rest grammar, vocabulary, skills and exam practice for the TOEIC.

Why did my last TOEIC score go down even though my English is at the same level?

It could be due to outside factors like you being tired or stressed. Alternatively, it could just be a statistical blip because you were or unlucky in the match between the questions and texts in a particular paper and your knowledge. In some cases, silly mistakes like writing the answers next to the wrong question number can also have an impact.

Why did my TOEIC score stay the same, even though I have been studying lots of English?

Apart from the reasons given in the question above, this could be because you have been studying lots of new language that you can't yet use quickly in test conditions and/ or haven't been revising the language you knew before and so have got slower at understanding it. Another common problem is that as your ability to understand the reading and listening texts increases you start trying to understand every word rather than looking out for the most important information.

What TOEIC materials should I buy?

In terms of making sure it is close to what you will see in the exam, it is best to choose something officially certified and recommended by ETS (the company that writes the TOEIC and TOEFL exams). You will need to carefully read the back of the book to make sure this is true, as many other publishers understandably want their materials to look official too. If you can't find anything with the ETS logo on, have already finished those books or will be using them in class and want something different for self-study, books from the other big international publishers are also usually okay.

In terms of the kind of book you want to buy, that will depend on how much time you have before the exam, if you are taking a class and what materials you are using in it, and what your own strengths and weaknesses are.

What is the single most important part of my English to improve if I want to improve my TOEIC score?

Most people find that a lack of Business English and General English vocabulary is what is most holding down their score. The second biggest factor is often a lack of reading speed, and the third is often not understanding fast, natural speech.

Why does my TOEIC teacher have speaking and pronunciation parts in class, even though I am only going to do listening and reading in the exam?

Speaking in a TOEIC class can be very useful- in getting you ready to listen to or read something, in discussing exam tactics, and in practising vocabulary and pronunciation so that you understand it when it is spoken at natural speed during the test.

Is TOEIC an Advanced level exam?

To get 850 points or above in TOEIC is a proof that you have Advanced listening and reading skills and can use those skills quickly and efficiently in a business setting. However, some people find it possible to reach that mark without having truly Advanced level writing and/ or speaking skills, and employers might want to give you an additional test on these skills in order to check your all round English level. Jobs that only ask for TOEIC 700 or below might not need an Advanced level of English, but students generally need to be at least Intermediate in order to benefit fully from studying for the test.

Do I need to do well in both the Reading and the Listening papers?

Not necessarily. The final mark is the total score from both papers, so if you make some mistakes in one paper it might be possible to make those marks up by doing better in the other one.

Although there is no grammar paper, I heard that they secretly test your grammar in the reading and listening papers. Is that true?

There are a few questions that you can get wrong by, for example, mixing up the meaning of tenses. However, most people find that the vocabulary is more difficult and more important for passing the exam.
